The value of water. Water is taken for granted. Its significance for our unique blue planet, its meaning as the origin of life, its eternal cycle of evaporation from the seas to the clouds to rain that falls to earth and serves its inhabitants as the basis of life – all of this is as forgotten as the fact that we only use the smallest part of water: water that has escaped from glaciers into the ground, been cleaned, filtered and enriched through all the different substrates and has re-emerged into the world from a gurgling spring or a deep well. Waters that differ from all other waters in character and composition – it is only these particular waters that we drink and only a few are able to taste the difference. A glass will now remind us of the many meanings of water with a decoration that does justice to water’s role. Ritzenhoff’s Aqua glass is a formal reminder of a conical filter, of a collection basin for the expensive resource, and is designed to present an unobstructed view through the glass and water so as to not to detract from its purity. The design gives this glass a lively decoration: a picture positioned on the bottom of the glass that is reflected in the glass and is magnified by the water. Motion and reflections also give life to the picture, it continuously changes depending on the light and angle of view, and when consumers lift the glass they can see – as if looking into a well – the picture on its bottom through the water. Because water’s meaning lies in its depths – which does not really fully explain the mystery of water as the origin of life, the most important element in the world.
